Understanding the risk perception of flood-prone urban communities is imperative for developing effective risk management plans. This study assesses urban flood risk perception among communities situated near various hazard sources. Three urban communities in Islamabad, Pakistan, located near a natural stream, foothills, and a river, were selected, and a sample of 600 households was surveyed using structured questionnaires. An urban flood risk perception index was developed to quantify the levels of risk perception. A correlation matrix and multiple regression analysis were used to examine the relationship between risk perception indicators and identify socioeconomic and flood hazard determinants influencing risk perception. The results reveal varying levels of flood risk perception across the selected hazard sources, with distinct factors influencing perceptions in each context. This highlights the need to consider the influences of hazard sources in shaping flood risk perception, thereby enabling the formulation of effective and context-specific disaster risk management strategies.
