Digital technology empowered intangible cultural heritage protection and inheritance is one of the research hotspots nowadays, and how to better apply virtual reality technology in the dissemination of intangible heritage is the key to it. This study analyzes the perceptual evaluation of the VR display of western Yunnan’s rural intangible cultural heritage, combines exploratory factor analysis and entropy weight method to explore the user preference factors of the digital display of western Yunnan’s intangible cultural heritage, and then proposes a path to revitalize the rural intangible cultural heritage of western Yunnan based on VR. The experiment shows that the use of VR for the display of non-legacy in western Yunnan is conducive to promoting the positive emotions of users, and more than 63.64% of the users agree that this method brings a good experience. The sense of reality, visual beauty and comfort, and the sense of interaction are the most important elements of the VR display of the western Yunnan NRH that users pay attention to, and the weight value is the largest among the level indicators, which is 0.259, 0.181, and 0.193, respectively. The article proposes that: to break the traditional presentation method, to strengthen the convenience of dissemination, to realize the revitalization of the NRH, and to establish a digital management mode, to promote the application of VR technology in digital display of the NRH in the rural villages of western Yunnan, and to enhance the digital display of NRH in the western Yunnan countryside. in order to enhance the dissemination and inheritance effect of western Yunnan’s non-legacy.
