The study aims to enhance understanding of the adoption intention process for blockchain technology (BT) in relatively unexplored areas, such as the retail supply chain. It focuses on assessing the factors that drive retailers’ intentions to adopt BT in their supply chain management using the technology, organization, and environment (TOE) framework. Additionally, the study seeks to determine the impact of BT adoption intention on supply chain transparency and the sustainable performance of retailers. The authors test the proposed TOE framework model utilizing survey data collected from 496 retail supply chain practitioners. The data are analyzed using the partial least squares method of structural equation modeling. The results suggest that top management support, relative advantage, and compatibility are significant factors influencing the adoption intention of blockchain among retailers. Furthermore, blockchain adoption intentions have a significant impact on enhancing supply chain transparency and achieving sustainable supply chain performance. The study provides a clear understanding of the blockchain adoption process within the retail supply chain. Current research has implications for both academia and industry. The findings contribute to BT research in the supply chain, enhancing understanding of BT adoption, supply chain transparency, and sustainability within the retail sector. The study’s novelty lies in its consideration of the retail supply chain for BT research, an area where such initiatives have been lacking. It provides a framework for exploring the factors of BT adoption intention and understanding their influence on retail supply chain transparency and sustainability.
