Examines how explanation strategies affect credibility in AI-generated news, suggesting important implications for information trustworthiness.
This study examines how distinct explanation strategies of AI-generated news influence perceived credibility across different news topics, and whether these effects are mediated by machine heuristic. A 2 (topic: sports vs. politics) × 4 (explanation type: developer vs. procedural vs. combined vs. none) between-subjects experiment was conducted with 377 participants in China. Results showed that procedural explanations and combined explanations significantly enhanced perceived credibility, whereas developer explanations alone did not. Moreover, AI-generated sports news was perceived as more credible than political news. Mediation analyses revealed that machine heuristic mediated partial effects of explanation type and topic on credibility.
