A response to Szudarski’s (2025) book review of ‘Vocabulary, corpus and language teaching. A machine-generated literature overview’

It is probably unusual to see a ‘readers response’ to a book review in the ELT Journal. However, this was a rather unusual book review, reviewing a rather unorthodox book. We read with interest and alarm the eloquently written review of the book ‘Vocabulary, corpus and language teaching: A machine-generated literature overview’ by Szudarski’s (2025) in ELT Journal. We commend Szudarski for writing the book review, and the journal for publishing it. We agree with him that the way the authors used GenAI in the reviewed book, ‘cannot be accepted… because it sets a dangerous precedent for the world of publishing’. (p. 3) and wish to respond to his call for more dialogue in the field regarding the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and to ‘consider what skills, knowledge and policies are required to ensure research integrity and the maintenance of high standards in written and published material’ (p. 5).
