Analysis demonstrates reliability metrics of fibre-optic networks, suggesting improvements in maintenance scheduling.
Telecommunications networks are essential to our society's future. The need for these services is growing along with human civilization. In this paper, the authors analyse the reliability and its measures like conditional mean time to failures (CMTTF) and limiting probability of a telecommunications networks, specifically of fibre-optic communication network that consists of two main units connected in series, where the first unit further divided into two parallel sub-units. This type of system needs to be reliable in order to function properly and schedule maintenance. Since the time of failures and repairs in real-world systems is often dependent on several factors that do not adhere to simple exponential distributions, the flexibility of Semi-Markov process (SMP) allows it to be more realistically. Here, various distributions like Weibull distribution and Gamma distribution are used apart from exponential distributions to simulate the time-to-failure of system components, providing versatility in reflecting varying failure rates across time. The effects of several system factors, such as failure and repair rates, are assessed, and the reliability and its metrics are calculated for the overall system.
