Investigates relationship between sleep-related breathing disorder symptoms and parasomnias in children, suggesting a need for thorough evaluation.
BACKGROUND: Sleep-related breathing disorders (SRBD) in children are frequently associated with adenoid hypertrophy. A correlation has been identified between SRBD and numerous sleep-related disturbances, such as parasomnias. However, the relationship between SRBD symptoms and parasomnias in children undergoing adenoidectomy remains poorly understood. AIMS: This study was designed to investigate the relationship between SRBD symptoms and parasomnias in children undergoing adenoidectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: the Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire -Related Breathing Disorder (PSQ-SRBD) and Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC) scales. Parasomnias (e.g. enuresis, sleepwalking) were documented through parental reports, followed by correlation analyses and group comparisons between symptomatic and asymptomatic children. Children with parasomnia symptoms demonstrated higher PSQ-SRBD and SDSC scores compared to those without parasomnias. Parasomnias were frequently reported among children with prominent SRBD symptoms. CONCLUSIONS AND SIGNIFICANCE: Higher SRBD symptom burden is associated with increased prevalence of parasomnias. Overall, these findings underscore the need for comprehensive evaluation of sleep disturbances in pediatric patients undergoing adenoidectomy.
