Qualitative study explores child welfare workers' views on children's decision-making roles, suggesting improvements for practice.
Children and youth have limited opportunities to participate in decisions that affect their lives, especially in child protection contexts. This qualitative study explores how 23 child welfare workers in three U.S. states conceptualize children and youth participation in decision-making (CYPDM). They describe CYPDM as a process of giving young clients a voice through inclusion, engagement, and active listening. The findings lay groundwork for strengthening the child welfare workforce’s ability to clearly communicate and advocate for implementing CYPDM in practice.
