Abstract The construction-integration model describes the interplay between top-down and bottom-up processes in comprehension: how top-down processes guide comprehension and how bottom-up processes constrain it. At every level of analysis-from basic linguistic processing to knowledge integration-both top-down and bottom-up processes jointly determine the nature of the mental representations formed in comprehension.
