An analytical model is proposed to predict failures of viscoelastic materials. The model assumes structural failure to be the result of the accumulation of incremental failures as a function of the applied loads. Following the model, a generalized failure criterion is derived. The resulting criterion has been applied to predict failures in fiberglass/rubber bonded system under various shear-loading histories. In addition to its predictive capability, the analytical model also has descriptive capability. It explains why in general failure data under creep or cyclic fatigue tests show the large scatter. Although the model currently deals with shear loading only, it also applies to tensile loading.
