Excessive pesticide residues remaining in food products due to intensive agricultural use, along with dietary exposure to mycotoxins, posing significant human health risks. Reducing these harmful substances in the food supply requires advances in food detoxification and high-throughput analytical methods for monitoring pesticide residues and mycotoxins. This review provides a critical perspective on the emerging use of biochar and its modifications as sustainable adsorbents for the removal and determination of pesticides and mycotoxins in food and feed. The review provides an overview of the potential applications of biochar in analytical chemistry as well as in food safety through decontamination. It explores the integration of biochar into advanced analytical workflows employing gas and liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry, highlighting its potential to improve analytical reliability in the quantification of pesticides and mycotoxins in food. Biochar's effectiveness for detoxifying food and feed from mycotoxins and pesticides is also summarized.
