Abstract Housing pressures in south-east England have intensified the interest in the urban fringe areas. Planners need to assess the requirements for new housing developments and amenity areas. Remotely-sensed data can provide planners with visually impacting material and a method of monitoring the urban fringe on medium-term time scales using change detection procedures. The addition of other sources of geographical information will enable planners to make greater use of remotely-sensed data.
