The changing role of the human resource developer places more emphasis on the career development of this professional. While dissertation research has been conducted on the career development of human resource developers in the Unites States, little is known about the career development of the ethnic minority human resource developer in general, and the black human resource developer specifically. We know that race influences career development in the United States. A qualitative study was conducted of ten black human resource developers. Interviewing was the primary data collection method and the data were analyzed using the constant comparative method. The findings were twofold. First, race was a hardship that the participants had to manage. Second, race influenced the mentoring they received, which almost always came from the participants' supervisors.
