This study applies the Knowledge-Attitude-Practice framework to investigate the influence of environmental knowledge on residents’ pro-environmental behaviors in a tourism destination context. Utilizing a survey of 243 residents from Nanling National Forest Park (NNFP), the study reveals several key findings. First, there is a positive relationship between residents’ environmental knowledge and their environmental attitudes, which subsequently predict greater engagement in pro-environmental behaviors. Second, environmental attitudes mediate the relationship between environmental knowledge and pro-environmental behavior. Third, residents’ place identity strengthens the effect of environmental knowledge on public pro-environmental behavior while mitigates the impact of environmental attitudes on private pro-environmental behavior. These results offer theoretical insights and practical implications for promoting sustainable management of tourism destinations, particularly national forest parks in China.
