Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were employed to investigate the composition, structure, and thermal behavior characteristics of Xinjiang asphaltite and Iran asphaltite. Infrared spectroscopy showed that both asphaltites were composed of predominantly highly condensed polycyclic aromatic rings with long alkyl groups and polar functional groups. NMR spectroscopy indicated that the hydrogens of the aromatic ring in both asphaltites were almost completely substituted. TGA curves showed that the initial decomposition temperature of Xinjiang asphaltite was around 190°C, whereas the final decomposition temperature is over 800°C. Xinjiang asphaltite exhibited the potential for asphalt modification due to its composition and structural characteristics, which are similar to asphaltene, though some of its components are more thermally stable than asphaltene.
