The thermal degradation of polyacrylonitrile was studied in vacuum. A very rapid, explosive type of chemical transformation was found at 265°C., as indicated by sudden changes in color, infrared absorption, x‐ray diffraction, solubility, density, weight loss, and appearance. This reaction is discussed in terms of a free‐radical, branched‐chain mechanism and also in relation to a possible means of measuring degree of isotactic order along the polymer chain.
