Key result
Thoracic sympathetic ganglia interventions primarily target hyperhidrosis, with ~70% of studies lacking a comparator.
Why the study?
The review aimed to suggest a Korean medicine approach by analyzing domestic and international clinical studies targeting the thoracic sympathetic ganglia.
This scoping review highlights that most clinical studies targeting thoracic sympathetic ganglia focus on hyperhidrosis, providing a foundation for future Korean medicine approaches.
Noncomparative studies predominate thoracic sympathetic ganglia research; leaves open efficacy questions for hyperhidrosis and warrants RCTs.

Park et al. (2024) conducted a review in Diseases or symptoms targeted by thoracic sympathetic ganglia interventions (primarily hyperhidrosis) (n=129). Interventions targeting thoracic sympathetic ganglia (including percutaneous and surgical approaches) was evaluated on Research trends, target diseases, and sympathetic chain levels. Among 129 studies targeting thoracic sympathetic ganglia, 69.8% were non-comparative, with hyperhidrosis being the most common target disease (66.9%) primarily associated with T1-7 levels.
