Explores improvisation in classical saxophone repertoire, enhancing skills in musicianship and creativity.
This research explores the role of improvisation within the classicalsaxophone repertoire. As a classically trained saxophonist with a focus oncontemporary music, I encountered the need to develop improvisational skills, which were previously lacking. This study investigates improvisation in depth, proposing exercises designed to support classically trained saxophonistsbeginning their journey into improvisation. The research is centered on TheDark Side by Jean-Denis Michat, a work for an improvising soloist andsaxophone quartet. It examines the type of improvisation required for thepiece, providing both an analysis of the work and examples of improvisations, alongside practical exercises to develop these skills. Written from the perspective of a classical musician who wants to develop her artistic skills, this study highlights the importance of including improvisation in classical training. It also shows that improvisation can be a useful tool for improving a wider range of musical abilities.
