This contribution presents the design and evaluation of a virtual laboratory experiment in fluid mechanics at the tertiary level. The instructionally redesigned experiment was embedded in a scenario-based learning context that reflects typical tasks in industrial research and development. A mixed-method approach was used to evaluate effectiveness, efficiency, and appeal. The experiment was effective: all teams achieved the intended learning outcomes, with about half reaching an enhanced level and nearly one-fifth a professional level. Individual results showed similar patterns, with roughly two-fifths of students performing at professional and enhanced levels. Compared to traditional laboratory work, students spent a comparable amount of time but reduced unproductive waiting periods, enabling a stronger focus on learning outcomes relevant to Working World 4.0. Supervisors reported an estimated 40% reduction in required time, and students rated the experiment significantly higher in terms of professional training and learning effect.
