Recommendations support physical education teacher education in fostering whole-of-school physical activity leadership.
K–12 schools provide an attractive setting for promoting physical activity (PA) through whole-of-school (WOS) approaches. These models emphasize school- and community-wide collaboration, expanding the role of physical education teachers beyond the gymnasium to serve as WOS PA leaders. Consequently, Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) programs are uniquely poised to inculcate PA leadership knowledge, skills, and dispositions into the next generation of physical education teachers. A growing body of literature is beginning to capture how various PETE programs in the United States are incorporating WOS PA training to prepare future PA leaders. Drawing from this literature, the current article provides pedagogical recommendations and practical guidance for infusing PA leadership competencies into PETE curricula. The goal is to support PETE faculty in better equipping future physical education teachers with the tools needed to engage school systems in creating and sustaining physically active cultures.
