Key result
Removal of fixation devices from healed hip fractures resulted in only 2 refractures in the previously fractured hip among 99 patients over 630 patient years.
Why the study?
Does removal of a fixation device from a healed hip fracture increase the risk of refracture in the previously fractured hip?
Does removal of a fixation device from a healed hip fracture increase the risk of refracture in the previously fractured hip?
The fixation device may be safely removed from a healed hip fracture without a high risk of refracture in the same hip.
Device removal linked to low refracture rates; supports selective use but leaves open need for randomized confirmation.
We studied 99 patients who had had the fixation device removed from a healed hip fracture. During a total of 630 patient years 17 second hip fractures were observed, but only two of these were in the previously fractured hip. We conclude that the fixation device may be safely removed from a healed hip fracture.
