To develop high-performance epoxy resin (EP) possessing superior flame retardancy, smoke suppression, and robust mechanical properties, an ionic compound (DAD) was synthesized through a simple acid/base-neutralization reaction. DAD's structure was precisely confirmed using multiple characterization techniques and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This compound was incorporated into EP as a flame retardant. The resulting EP/DAD composite exhibited markedly improved flame retardancy, achieving a limiting oxygen index (LOI) of 34.7 %. Compared to pure EP, it also showed substantial reductions of 48.0 % in total smoke production (TSP) and 32.1 % in total heat release (THR). The enhanced flame-retardant efficacy primarily stems from DAD's free radical scavenging ability and its strong catalytic charring effect. Moreover, the EP/6DAD composite displayed strong mechanical performance. Its tensile strength increased by 25.2 % and flexural strength by 73.8 % compared to pure EP. Notably, flexural toughness also increased significantly by 150.0 %. Additionally, the EP composite maintained its corrosion resistance. These characteristics highlight the potential of EP/DAD composites to broaden the application scope of epoxy resin materials.
