Key result
hiPSC-CM spheroids engraft and achieve 1:1 electrical coupling with native myocardium up to 240 bpm.
Why the study?
Adult mammalian hearts lack the regenerative capacity to replace cardiomyocytes lost during acute myocardial infarction, leading to scar formation and heart failure.
Answers are grounded in this paper and cite their sources.
This study provides first-in-large-mammal evidence that transplanted human iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes can electrically couple with host myocardium after infarction, even at high heart rates.

Guragain et al. (2024) studied Acute myocardial infarction (swine model) (n=6). hiPSC-CM spheroids was evaluated on Electrical coupling between injected hiPSC cardiac spheroids and native myocardium. hiPSC-CM spheroids engrafted and electrically coupled with native myocardium one week after injection into infarcted swine hearts, maintaining 1:1 coupling at rates up to 240 beats/min.
