Results indicate that while vicarious post-traumatic growth is linked to secondary traumatic stress for emergency room physicians, it is not so for nurses. Theoretical implications concerning the role of trauma symptoms in vicarious post-traumatic growth are discussed. Clinical implications are raised regarding the identification of excessive secondary traumatic stress levels and the need for interventions to both decrease stress levels, and to increase vicarious post-traumatic growth levels.
