Three methods in general use for predicting sediment yields from watersheds are: (1) direct sediment‐load measurements, (2) estimating yield on the basis of measurements in nearby watersheds, and (3) estimating the rate of erosion in a watershed and the delivery rate of sediment. The third method is a relatively new approach to determination of sediment yield. The objective of the Symposium on Watershed Erosion and Sediment Yields is to assemble existing information and knowledge on sediment yields as a guide to technicians engaged in research and field studies for solution of erosion and sedimentation problems.
