Thomas et al. (1960) have emphasized that the blood factor is of greater importance than the atherosclerotic plaque (local factor) in thrombus formation. The nature of the postulated haemato- logical factor is not yet known and the relationship of findings of several workers (Merskey, Gordon, and Lachner, 1960; Poole, 1962; Gupta and Rai, 1963) regarding coagulation, to the significantly different incidence of thrombosis in various geo- graphic areas, is still uncertain.
