Guardians of the National Parks: Visitors’ Attitudes Toward the Willingness to Supervise and Intervene

National parks and other public lands across the United States have seen a significant increase in visitation resulting in increased criminal and deviant acts, including the violation of rules regarding wildlife, traffic, and hiking. We explore the nature of these behaviors using data from an anonymous online survey of a sample of visitors to U.S. National Parks. The results of this study have implications for policies and programs designed to reduce or prevent criminal and deviant behavior among visitors.
