Purpose This study aims to identify the human competencies that artificial intelligence (AI) tools cannot replicate effectively. It proposes strategies for hiring managers to identify and assess such skills. It also provides a practical framework for business leaders to develop a skilled workforce in AI-augmented organizations. Design/methodology/approach This viewpoint builds on existing literature on human resource management in AI-enabled workplaces. The views are based on the author’s extensive hiring experience as a general manager/product management executive in the consumer electronics domain and recruitment interactions with 100 + candidates for over 20 roles. Structured conversations with 16 cross-functional executives across product management, marketing, engineering and HR were also leveraged for empirical insights. Findings Five areas of human skills consistently emerge as essential in the AI-enabled business landscape: intuition and experiential wisdom, critical thinking, storytelling, ethical governance and relationship intelligence. Conventional hiring processes are insufficient for identifying such talent. Redesigning job architecture and using realistic business case studies significantly improve hiring efficiency in AI-enabled organizations. Research limitations/implications The findings primarily reflect large enterprise context and North American business environment. Future research should explore applications in smaller organizations and other geographies. Empirical and practitioner observations refer to the consumer electronics manufacturing domain. AI requirements can vary across business sectors. Practical implications HR leaders and hiring managers should collaborate to rebuild job architectures and hiring practices to focus on essential human competencies that cannot be effectively replicated by AI tools. Interview protocols should be retooled to examine realistic business applications and interpersonal narration skills. Organizations should strategically integrate AI into business processes without diminishing the value of critical thinking, narration and relationship-building capabilities. Originality/value Literature on practitioner-centric and empirically informed frameworks for efficiently identifying essential human competencies is limited. This paper summarizes effective hiring strategies in the age of AI and executive insights validated through business experience. Practical solutions are provided to continuously adopt AI in business processes.
