In the U.K. today there are 11 8-blockers, as well as approximately 52 different formulations or trademarks including combination products, in various strengths; this does not take into account the generic products also available. World-wide there are more than 30 different 8-blockersY although propranolol is still the most widely used and is believed to account for over a third of the World market. Atenolol and metoprolol are the two next most popular. These 8-blockers, available today, are used primarily in hypertension and angina although some are registered for use to control arrhythmias, thyrotoxicosis and migraine. The most recent new 8-blocker to the U.K. market is betaxolol (trademark Kerlone) launched in September 1984. Despite this large number there is a new wave of 8-blocking compounds nearing completion of research and development. At present over 40 8-blockers are currently in development world-wide with over one-third of these close to a market launch. This review will look closely at some of the new products now awaiting registration or in Phase I11 clinical trials in addition to the most recent entry to the U.K. market, betaxolol, and assess their place amongst existing 8-blockers.
