The basic concept of the paracrystalline disorder model is revised and its applicability to disordered structures, notably liquids and amorphous materials, is examined. The concept of the ideal paracrystal can be considered useful provided its application is restricted to a semi‐quantitative interpretation of anisotropic disorder structures; its applicability to liquid structures and amorphous structures with homogenous density fluctuations is very limited. The concept of the real paracrystal does not appear to be an improvement over that of the ideal paracrystal.
