A demyelinating disease limited to the central portion of the pons was first described in 1959 by Adams, Victor, and Mancall. The absence of this condition from their earlier post-mortem material and from the neuropathological literature led the authors to suggest that this was a new disease, which they associated with alcoholism and/or malnutrition.
