In 2021, a major revision to the IEEE C37.242 TM Guide for Synchronization, Calibration, Testing and Installation of Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) for Power System Protection and Control was published. The revision not only follows the revision of the PMU standard, now published as a dual-logo IEC/IEEE Std. 60255-118-1-2018, but also draws on seven years of industry experience in the installation and applications of PMUs in electrical power systems worldwide. This paper delves into application specific details gained over two decades of industry experience in developing the PMU standards and guide. It highlights the importance of PMU requirements and guidance published by IEEE and IEC. The purpose of this paper is to share this expert knowledge in a holistic manner from the perspective of manufacturers, utility members, and control center users.
