In Brief BOLSTER, D. R., S. R. KIMBALL, and L. S. JEFFERSON. Translational control mechanisms modulate skeletal muscle gene expression during hypertrophy. Exerc. Sport Sci. Rev., Vol. 31, No. 3, pp. 111–116, 2003. Understanding the basic mechanisms regulating skeletal muscle hypertrophy is essential to providing strategies for optimizing and maintaining skeletal muscle mass. This review focuses on the importance of mRNA translation in mediating acute increases in protein synthesis after resistance exercise as well as the anabolic response of muscle growth. Regulation of mRNA translation is a critical component in the induction of skeletal muscle hypertrophy by resistance exercise.
