Abstract A new pentasaccharide, lacto-N-fucopentaose III has been isolated from human milk and characterized as O-β-d-Gal-(1 → 4)-O-α-l-Fuc-(1 → 3)-O-β-d-GlcNac-(1 → 3)-O-β-d-Gal-(1 → 4)-d-Glc. The preparation of O-β-d-GlcNAc-(1 → 3)-O-β-d-Gal-(1 → 2)-d-erythritol from lacto-N-tetraose is described.
