The feasibility of making selections in the F 2 and F 3 generation on the basis of prediction tests of barley quality was evaluated. Prediction tests made on F 2 generation material were found to be unsatisfactory as a measure of quality of the F 3 generation, based on heritability estimates and correlation coefficients. Heritability estimates obtained using variance components in the F 3 generation were high and indicated that progress should be possible when selecting for nitrogen, extract, or diastatic power in this generation. Correlation coefticients among the three quality factors showed that extract was negatively associated with nitrogen and with diastatic power and that nitrogen and diastatic power were positively associated
