Multi-shelled hollow carbon nanospheres with a high specific surface area of 1050 m 2 g −1 were prepared by an aqueous emulsion approach, which achieved a high percentage of sulfur loading (86 wt%). When applied as cathodes in lithium–sulfur batteries, the composites delivered a high specific capacity of 1350 mA h g −1 at a current rate of 0.1 C, significantly enhanced cyclability and high rate performance.
