We consider the impact of establishing three regional airports in Poland on the local economic development at county level. To this aim, we apply the difference-in-differences method, both in the non-spatial and spatial version, using share of employment in market services in total employment as the outcome variable. The control group is selected so as to maximise pre-treatment economic similarity between counties. The estimated average direct treatment effect of +2.8–3.2 percentage points is heterogeneous (not applicable to Radom airport or big city counties) and substantially exceeds input-output predictions, but does not extend to total employment and does not propagate through space.
