SUMMARY This article reviews 65 reports of research on rural youth usage of alcohol, marijuana and hard drugs. Alcohol use is the same for both rural and urban youth, aid rural youth are closing the gap in regards to marijuana smoking. However, with the exception of inhalants and stimulants, use of hard drugs was lower among rural youth. The article explores factors associated with use by rural youth and concludes that factors identified by research are similar to those commonly found to explain use by urban youth. Greater utilization of criminological theories by rural-based research is recommended.
