  • Created interactive space-time and application progression views.
  • Compared applications on OpenMP and StarPU runtime systems.
  • Demonstrated low tracing overhead of tools, competitive with existing solutions.
  • Showed the influence of task depend clause on application performance.

Abstract

ABSTRACT OpenMP, a leading tool for loop‐based parallel programming on shared memory platforms, is becoming a more powerful environment for exploiting task‐based parallelism. Recent specification versions have added support for new task clauses, while the OMPT interface provides a standard API for performance monitoring. In this paper, we present a new approach to enhance the performance analysis of OpenMP task‐based applications. We rely on open‐source solutions such as the Tikki OMPT tracing tool and the StarVZ performance visualization framework to create enriched space–time and application progression views with the optional support of a responsive and interactive interface. We demonstrate this approach by analyzing the influence of the task depend clause and by comparing applications using two different runtime systems: OpenMP and StarPU. We also demonstrate that the tracing overhead of the employed tools is low and competitive with other tracing facilities.
