Abstract

Chiral binaphthols 3 were obtained by oxidative coupling of 2-naphthols in the presence of achiral biphenol-derived diastereomeric VIV oxo complexes. Despite its conformationally flexible biphenyl moiety, the best catalyst 2 (90–97 % ee, 62–99 % yield) exhibits comparable or even higher enantioselectvities than an analogue with an optically pure 1,1′-binaphthyl group.
