Marital readiness in Turkish emerging adults: The role of familial factors

This study aimed to examine the relationship between Turkish emerging adults’ marital readiness and familial factors, including family communication, number of siblings, and the desire for a marriage similar to one’s parents’ marriage. The participants consisted of 372 never-married Turkish emerging adults (74% female). The findings revealed that family communication significantly predicted financial readiness, emotional readiness, interpersonal relationship readiness, and social responsibility readiness. Family communication was not a significant predictor of family life and family role readiness or sexual readiness. More positive family communication was associated with higher levels of financial readiness, emotional readiness, interpersonal relationship readiness, and social responsibility readiness dimensions. The number of siblings was a significant predictor only for financial readiness, with a greater number of siblings linked to higher financial readiness. The desire to have a marriage similar to that of one’s parents did not significantly predict any dimension of marital readiness. The results are discussed in the light of the literature.
