The black bear (Ursus americanus), formerly widespread throughout Texas, is now restricted to the western portion of the state (Davis, 1974). In 1987, it was classified as an endangered species in Texas. Virtually all that is known about the present status and distribution of black bears in Texas is from isolated sightings, usually associated with forested or brushy habitat with a moderate to high cover density and diversity, rugged topography, and low human population densities (<4/km2, R.
