Demonstrates efficient switching of chiral modes in photonic devices, indicating advanced control in optical applications.
Dynamic effects in the proximity of non-Hermitian degeneracies have been the subject of numerous recent studies. Carrying over these unique features to photonic-integrated devices has so far been limited to demonstrations of asymmetric switching of nearly degenerate spatial modes, typically with high transmission loss. In this paper, we draw upon recent advances in the design and fabrication of Brillouin-active waveguides to show that nonreciprocal switching between skewed spectral modes with net gain can be achieved with realistic system parameters. The spectral separation can be dynamically reconfigured and extended up to 100’s of GHz, with switching efficiencies surpassing 90%.
