Descriptive guide compiles key information on crustose coralline algae, highlighting their role in reef health.
This guide presents 22 descriptive sheets compiling key information on the main crustose coralline algae (CCA) observed in the inner reefs and outer reef slopes of Moorea Island, French Polynesia. It is part of a more comprehensive inventory carried out within the framework of the CORALMATES program funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR). The objective was to document this particular group of red algae, some of whose representatives play an important role in maintaining reef structure and coral recruitment. This collection compiles information established by a DNA barcoding-type genetic approach, supplemented by descriptions of external morphology for 32 of the 33 crustose coralline algae taxa observed in Moorea. In total, the 33 genetically identified taxa are distributed among eight families, including six belonging to the order Corallinales (9 genera, 29 species), one to the order Hapalidiales (1 genus, 2 species), and one to the order Sporolithales (1 genus, 2 species).
