Reduction of catecholamine synthesis by as much as 70% has been achieved in man with the oral administration of a-methyl-para-Ltyrosine, a tyrosine hydroxylase inhibitor. Significant reduction of blood pressure and improvement of the general clinical status have been achieved in patients with pheochromocytoma. However, at the doses employed, no significant blood pressure effects were noted in patients with essential hypertension.
