Study examines changes in central defenders' performance metrics over a decade, highlighting skill enhancements.
This study examined the match performance evolution of central defenders in the German Bundesliga through a 10-year comparison between the 2014/2015 and 2023/2024 seasons. Match data for 105 players were obtained from the official league database, comprising technical, physical, and defensive parameters. The findings obtained from independent t-tests identified seasonal differences, suggesting a growing role in possession and build-up play, as well as a shift toward greater locomotor volume with fewer high-intensity efforts. A cleaner and more controlled defensive behavior was also observed. Overall, Bundesliga central defenders have apparently become more involved in the game from a technical and tactical perspective, while maintaining their efficiency in defense. This study underlines the improvement of technical proficiency and decision-making in defensive roles, which potentially highlight the importance of ball-related skills and match endurance in training design.
