Review highlights innovations in membrane technology for improved efficiency in industrial applications, suggesting future research directions.
Membrane technology has become a key enabler of sustainable chemical engineering by improving resource efficiency, reducing waste, and lowering energy consumption. Recent advances in membrane materials, including high-performance polymers, bio-based membranes, hybrid composites, and inorganic membranes, have significantly enhanced separation efficiency, durability, and environmental compatibility. Ceramic and metallic membranes offer superior thermal and chemical stability for harsh industrial applications. Innovations in fabrication techniques, such as nanostructuring, 3D printing, and green synthesis methods, are further improving membrane performance and scalability. Additionally, the integration of artificial intelligence and predictive modelling is accelerating material discovery and process optimization, enabling smarter and more adaptive membrane systems. Despite these advances, challenges including membrane fouling, high production costs, and large-scale implementation remain barriers to broader industrial adoption. This review highlights recent developments and applications of membrane technologies in water treatment, gas separation, energy production, and process intensification, while identifying future research directions to support sustainable industrial development.
