Demonstrates a simple method to convert aldehydes to benzil derivatives using NHC and FeCl₃, suggesting a sustainable approach.
Herein, we report the first example of NHC-and FeCl3-mediated direct conversion of substituted aromatic aldehydes to functionalized benzil derivatives via a simple and sustainable one-pot aerobic oxidation using a commercially available N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalyst and FeCl3 under open-air conditions. The developed mild oxidation method utilizes readily available starting materials. It demonstrates high yields, broad functional-group tolerance, operational simplicity, accessibility, use of oxygen molecules, open-air conditions, and non-toxic reagents.
