The Electronic States of Octahedral and Tetrahedral Mn⁺⁺ in α, β and γ Manganous Sulphide

The reflection spectra of α , β and γ MnS have been recorded in the region 12,000 to 40,000 cm −1 , together with a range of solid solutions of MnS in hexagonal ZnS. This work was carried out at room and low temperature. Assignments are given for the observed transitions within the 3 d 5 configuration of the Mn 2+ ion. The relation between the crystal field parameter, 10 Dq , in the different crystal forms is discussed and shown to be in agreement with basic ligand field theory.
