Is the IL28B rs12979860 genotype associated with histologic features of NAFLD in Caucasian North American patients?
The IL28B rs12979860 genotype does not appear to be associated with histologic features of NAFLD in Caucasian North American patients.
We read with interest the paper by Petta et al. evaluating IL28B in 160 patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The authors described the association of IL28B with both inflammation and fibrosis, though the association with fibrosis was not significant after adjusting for inflammation [1]. Interestingly, steatosis, the hallmark of fatty liver disease, was not associated with IL28B in the study by Petta et al.
